Auslan Class material for Kindergarten/Pre-schoolers - Early Stage 1
This material is organised and designed to assist in the teaching of AUSLAN to children at the Pre-School/Kindergarten or Early stage 1 level.
It has been prepared by Lee Bilby, based on 9 years experience teaching Auslan to children, feedback from pre-school teachers and Child care workers; and on the following documents:
- The K-6 Generic Syllabus Framework for Languages Other Than English k-6 (NSW)(ISBN : 0731075110)
- "Defining Mandatory Outcomes in the K-6 Curriculum", by the NSW Board of Studies
- WA Early childhood LOTE Framework (Open in a new window)

Introduction
At the Preschool/Kindergarten level Auslan (as a second language) is usually only taught in a rudamentory level, in a fun and entertaining way.
It can, however, also be used as a suplement to communication development, improving overall communication in children, especially at the pre-oral
level; or where articulation is limited for one reason or anouther. (Fact note: In Australia 1 in every 7 children have a speech impairment)
For this reason, you will discover, not only a number of resources and class activities that stimulate Auslan communication skills, but also resources that will assist overall communication within both the childcare and preschool/kindergarten setting.
Resources are divided under the following headings:

Label For Me
Children and Adults alike benefit greatly from the use of Auslan labels, they can also help introduce, in a non-confrontational manner, the English word for everyday objects, stimulating
a childs understanding of the written word as well as their understanding of Auslan. For this reason we have developed a set of "Preschool Labels", that include a clear easy to understand picture of the item, the English word, and the Auslan Sign.
These labels can be downloaded now, or purchased from Bilby Publishing as laminated cards, for placement around your classroom.
We recommend placing signs, like that for toilet, where the child is likely to think about the toilet, IE at the door they would have to exit to get to the toilet. In the same way, outdoor activities would normally be placed on the door nearest the playground, fruit signs where they have fruit break and so on.
Sing With Me
It has long been accepted that child love......the following are common nursary rhymes and songs, that are easy for little ones to sign.
Play with me
Here are some great games for the whole class to play, that will stimulate little minds, especially on rainy and very hot weather, and help them learn Auslan at the same time.
